Pa.ul decides to take her to h.is ancestral home in the co.untry for so.me peace .and. quiet, but the superstitio.us-filled setting opens .a Pandora’s Box of. terrible occurrences. .We soon discover t.hat Paul is a real. son-of-a.-bitch who plans t.o scare his wife to d.eath, planning to control h.er fortune and continue .his secret affair with s.eductive bad girl Mireille .(Silvia Miró), who happens .to be the niece of the taro.t card-readi.ng housek.eep.er, Mabile (Lola Gaos). Pau.l’s malevolent scheme wo.rks, but he still .has to worry about an ad.ditional money-hun.gry mistress (this. guy real.ly gets around!), .the unforgiving Mabil.e, as well as new fianceé M.ireille who might be hid.ing a thing or two herse.lf. More grisly murders fol.low, and the ghost of Marna.c returns from hell to puni.sh the most .despicabl.e h.uman character in the film.. PANIC BEATS was also w.ritten by Naschy (.under his real name Jaci.nto Molina) who in.jects the film wit.h an old-.fashioned spooky h.ouse motif, beefed up. with a modern movie sense .of violence and sexualit.y. The film offers nothi.ng too innovative storywise., and even Naschy admits on. the disc’s extras that it .was partly i.nspired b.y G.ASLIGHT and REBECCA, but he. seems to just toss in a. hodgepodge of exp.loitation and horror ing.redients, while de.livering a stylish. and enjo.yable effort with .a number of twists an.d some genuinely chilling m.oments. The camera shots. and lighting are both e.ffective, and there's even .does a cool set-up (much li.ke what Freddie Francis did. in THE SKUL.L and THE. CR.EEPING FLESH) where we see .the point of view of Mar.nac through his da.rk helmet as he stalks h.is female prey. Gr.aphically, we are .exposed t.o everything from .a plate of bloody eye.balls, to victims being bea.ten relentlessly with th.e various Medieval weapo.ns affixed on the house’s w.alls (for example, someone .is axed in the stomach, fol.lowed by the. soaked e.ntr.ails oozing out!). Naschy’s. most frequent 1980s lea.ding lady, Julia S.aly, is not given much t.o do, but with her. offbeat looks, is. a nice p.resence nonetheles.s. The prominent fema.le star here is Silvia Miró. who is seen in the buff. frequently, and she cer.tainly makes for some well-.appreciated Euro starlet ey.e candy.
