Th.e moody Clyde soon fa.lls in love wit.h Nancy's honest charm .and beauty. Nancy, a .sec.retary, introduces Clyde to. her boss, millionaire Andr.ew Bonner, and persuades. Bonner to showcase C.lyde's p.ain.tings at one of his priv.ate sh.owings. To Nancy.39;s delight., Clyd.e's painting, a d.epiction of the. tragic figure Cassandra fo.r which she modeled, .win.s first prize at the showin.g. The evening is perfect u.ntil an expensive bracel.et is stolen from a g.uest, and Cl.yde. later finds it in Nancy.'s. purse. After Clyd.e confronts .a conf.used Nancy about the .theft, she rela.tes the following story to .explain her behavior:. A.s a young girl, Nancy lives. with her housekeeper mothe.r in the lavish Willis h.ome and plays with Ka.ren, the Wil.lis.es' little daughter.. Altho.ugh Karen wants to. invite Nanc.y to h.er upcoming birthday .party, Mrs. Wil.lis refuses to allow the lo.wer-class Nancy to at.ten.d. A true friend, Karen pro.mises to give Nancy one of .the pins her guests are .receiving. When Karen. realizes th.ere. are no extra pins, howe.ver, s.he offers Nancy th.e beautiful .locket. she has just receive.d from her moth.er. Nancy's subsequent .joy is soon crushed w.hen. Mrs. Willis demands that s.he return the locket. Later., the locket is discover.ed missing, and Nancy. is accused .of .theft. Although Nancy.9;s mo.ther soon finds th.e locket in .Karen&.#39;s dress, Mrs. Wil.lis refuses to .believe Nancy and forces he.r to "confess.&q.uot.; The adult Nancy then adm.its to Clyde that this chil.dhood humiliation caused. her unconscious desi.re to steal .the. bracelet at the party. .After .a forgiving Clyde .returns the .bracel.et anonymously, he an.d Nancy continu.e their romance until the n.ext party at the Bonn.ers.'. Suspecting that the .absent Nancy is spending th.e evening in Bonner'.s arms, Clyde leaves .the party to. lo.ok for her and sees her .exitin.g Mrs. Bonner'.s bedroom ju.st aft.er two gunshots are f.ired. Bonner is. found murdered, and Mrs. B.onner's diamond n.eck.lace, stolen. Although Nanc.y and Clyde are questioned,. valet Myron Dexter is e.ventually found guilt.y and is sen.ten.ced to die. Clyde, howev.er, st.rongly suspects Na.ncy, but she. angri.ly maintains her inno.cence and leave.s for Florida. Back in his. office, Blair defend.s N.ancy to Clyde but invites h.im to his house that evenin.g. When confronted, Nanc.y denies everything a.nd tells Bla.ir .that Clyde is merely jea.lous. .The next day, Dext.er is execut.ed, an.d a guilt-ridden Clyd.e jumps from Bl.air's office window to .his death. To avoid .sca.ndal, Blair and Nancy move .to England, and after World. War II breaks out, Blai.r volunteers his medi.cal services., w.hile Nancy becomes an am.bulanc.e driver. Expressi.ng concern o.ver Bl.air's health, Nan.cy insists that. they take a vacation at Lo.rd and Lady Wyndham.39;.s manor house. Just as they. are leaving, Blair learns .that one of Lady Wyndham.'s valuable jewel.s has been s.tol.en. Blair suspects Nancy. but i.s unable to prove .anything unt.il a b.omb destroys their fl.at and reveals .her cache of stolen jewels.. Although confronted. di.rectly, Nancy continues to .deny any guilt and divorces. Blair after he suffers .a nervous breakdown. .Back in John..9;s study, Blair, like C.lyde b.efore him, tries t.o convince J.ohn to. abandon Nancy, who n.ow uses the nam.e Patton. John, however, be.lieves Nancy when she. te.lls him that Blair is still. suffering from his breakdo.wn.
