该片是由Murray Lerner执导的欧美综艺,于0年上映,主要讲述了: "Bob. Dylan going electric.&qu.ot; at the 1.965 Newport Folk Festival i.s one of tho.se epochal moments in. rock history that seemi.ngly everyone has heard .about,. but what. few p.eople .seem to know is that .it wasn't some. ephemera.l event that we. only kno.w from word .of mouth .-- filmmaker Murra.y Lerner documented t.he .performances. at the Newport Festival fo.r several ye.ars running, and The .Other Side of the Mirror. collects footage from t.he thr.ee years .Dylan .appear.ed at the celebrated .folk gathering, al.lowing us. to see Dylan.39;s rise. through the. folk sce.ne for ourselves. .Watching Lerner's. do.cumentary, w.hat's most remarkable i.s how much D.ylan changed over the. course of 36 months; th.e young folkie performin.g at t.he aftern.oon &q.uot;wo.rkshop" at the s.ide of Joan Baez i.n 1963 is. at once nervy .and hesit.ant, singing. his word.y tunes while chop.ping away at his acou.sti.c guitar and. energizing the crowd witho.ut seeming t.o know just what he.39;s doing. In 1964, Dyl.an all but owns Newport,. and h.e clearly. knows. it; h.e's the talk of t.he Festival, with .Baez and .Johnny Cash sin.ging his .praises (and. his song.s), and his comman.d of the stage is vis.ibl.y stronger a.nd more confident while his. new materia.l (including "Mr.. Tambourine Man" a.nd "It Ain't Me., Babe.") s.ees hi.m movi.ng away from the &quo.t;protest songs&qu.ot; that .first made his .name. Whe.n the audien.ce demand.s an encore after .Dylan's evening s.et .(Odetta and .Dave Van Ronk were schedule.d to follow .him), Peter Yarrow tr.ies to keep the show mov.ing along while Dylan be.ams at. the crow.d'.s adul.ation, like the rock .star he was quickl.y becomin.g. By the time .the 1965 .Newport Fest.ival roll.ed around, Dylan.39;s epochal "Li.ke .a Rolling St.one" was starting to s.cale the sin.gles charts, and the .hardcore folk audience w.as clearly of two minds .about .his popul.ar (an.d popu.list) success. When D.ylan, Fender Strat.ocaster i.n hand, perform.s "M.aggie's .Farm".; backed by Al Koo.per, Mike Bloomfield .and. the rhythm .section from the Paul Butte.rfield Blues. Band, the raucous bu.t hard-driving number in.spires a curious mixture. of en.thusiasti.c chee.ring a.nd equally emphatic b.ooing, and while l.egend has. it that the ve.rsion of ."Like a. Rolling .Stone" that f.ollowed was a shamble.s, .the song coo.ks despite drummer Sam Lay&.#39;s diffic.ulty in finding the g.roove, though if anythin.g the division of the cr.owd.9;s loyal.ties i.s even. stronger afterward. .After these two nu.mbers, Dy.lan and his ban.d leave t.he stage, wi.th Yarrow. (once again servi.ng as MC) citing tech.nic.al problems .(if Pete Seeger really pull.ed the power. on Dylan, as legend .has it, there's no s.ign of it here); Dylan r.eturns. to the s.tage w.ith an. acoustic six-string .to sing "Mr. .Tambourin.e Man" and. "It.'s All O.ver Now, .Baby Blue" be.fore vanishing into t.he .night withou.t comment. While much of th.e audience a.t Newport in 1965 wan.ted the "old" .Dylan back, his strong, .willfu.l perform.ances .even o.n the acoustic stuff .makes it obvious t.hat the s.crappy semi-ama.teur we s.aw at the be.ginning o.f the movie was go.ne forever, and the o.vat.ions suggest. more than a few people wan.ted to see D.ylan rock. Lerner'.;s film tells us a certa.in amount of what we alr.eady k.nows, but. it ge.ntly d.ebunks a few myths ab.out Dylan during t.his pivot.al moment in hi.s career,. and his per.formances. are committed and. forceful throughout;. no. matter how .many times you've read .about Dylan&.#39;s Newport shoot-o.ut of 1965, seeing it is. a revelatory experience., and .Lerner ha.s asse.mbled .this archival materia.l with intelligenc.e and tas.te. This is mus.t-see vie.wing for any.one inter.ested in Dylan or .the folk scene of the. .39;60s.
