Th.e dystopian nea.r future of O-BI, O-BA find.s a gr.oup of survivors of the nuc.lear war that rava.ged the Earth inha.biting an un.derworld concrete .bunker. an.d biding their tim.e a.s they wait for the myst.eri.ous Ark, an air ship .of some kind that .will come and save th.em. The Ark pro.ves to be an elaborate hoax., care.fully designed to give hope. to the malnourish.ed and desperate d.enizens of t.he bunker, while i.n the .mea.ntime the dome tha.t s.eparates their miserable. ex.istence from the nucl.ear winter outside. is slowly caving in.. What first st.riked me about the movie is. the d.esign of the bunker and the. depiction of the .survivors. The sur.vivors are g.aunt, filthy and t.erribl.e-l.ooking penitents, .dre.ssed in rags and aimless.ly .wandering the neon-li.t halls of the bun.ker like automatons. .The bunker is a. rundown, seedy place, with. brigh.t neon lights peering from .all sides like the. eyes of malignant. beasts. On. one hand it is a .slight.ly .80's depiction of .the. dystopian future but th.e m.ovie never stoops dow.n to MAD MAX chees.e. Instead it combine.s biting politi.cal satire with the bleak o.utlook. of a world with no future,. black comedy with. barbs on apathy, .religion and. power. The surviv.ors, f.or .example, are fed s.ome. kind of flour dropping .fro.m a tube that hovers .in the air - later. on we discover the f.ood supervisor .uses books and the Bible it.self a.s filler for this meagre me.al. There are many. such short symbol.ic touches, .perhaps not life-c.hangin.g o.r faith-restoring,. ye.t playful, clever and in.spi.red. One thing is fo.r sure; O-BI, O-BA. is not your run-of-t.he-mill sci-fi .schlock. It overcomes its m.odest .budget with creativity and .has genuine artist.ic aspirations bot.h from a wri.ting and directing. persp.ect.ive. My opinion is. th.at it should have been f.ilm.ed in black and white. instead of colour. though. The director. uses atmospher.ic light and shadow to grea.t effe.ct and it would have regist.ered even better i.n stark black and .white. The b.lue-green neon on .the ot.her. hand outstays its. we.lcome after a while. Jus.t a. minor gripe in an ot.herwise solid b-mo.vie with its heart se.t in all the ri.ght places.
