A.ll the sets were constructe.d indoors to. be able to hav.e complete control. over the lighting. The fil.m was sho.t complet.ely. in. black and white, .matching the illus.tra.tions done by Aubrey Beards.ley in the printed ed.ition of Wilde's play. The .costum.es, designed by Natacha Ram.bova, used m.aterial only fr.om Maison Lewis of. Paris, such as the real si.lver lamé. loinclot.hs .wor.n by the guards.　　.No major studio wo.uld. be associated with the fil.m, and it was years a.fter its completion before .it was. released, by a minor indep.endent distr.ibutor. It was .a complete failure. at the time and marked the. end of N.azimova's. pr.odu.cing career.　　A lo.ngstanding rumor, .whi.ch seems to have started wh.ile the film was stil.l in production, suggests t.hat it.s cast is comprised entirel.y of gay and. bisexual actor.s in an homage to .Oscar Wilde, as per star an.d produce.r Nazimov.a's. de.mand. It is, of co.urse, impossible t.o s.ay, but one of the extras i.n Salomé reported tha.t a number of the cast memb.ers—bo.th featured and extras—were. indeed gay,. but not an unu.sual percentage of. them, and certainly not al.l of them.. What ca.n b.e s.aid is that Nazimo.va herself was a l.esb.ian, the two guard characte.rs (who, next to Salo.mé, have the most screen ti.me) ar.e at least played very ster.eotypically .gay, and severa.l of the female co.urtiers are men in drag.　　S.alomé was. screened. in. 19.89 at the New York. International Fes.tiv.al of Lesbian and Gay films. and in 1990 at the N.ew York Gay Experimental Fi.lm Fes.tival.　　In 2000, the United. States Libr.ary of Congress. deemed the film c.ulturally significant and s.elected i.t for pre.ser.vat.ion in the Nationa.l Film Registry.
