Despite the film. being on.ly a l.ittle over an hour. in length a.nd .having no real action. to speak of, i.t cost over $350,000 to mak.e. All the sets we.re constr.uct.ed indoors t.o be able to have .complete control over th.e l.ighting. .The film was. shot completely in b.lack and white, matching th.e illustr.ations. done by Aubrey Be.ardsley in t.he .printed edition of Wi.lde's play. The. costumes, designed by Nata.cha Rambova, used .material .onl.y from Maiso.n Lewis of Paris, .such as the real silver .lam.é loinclo.ths worn by .the guards. No major. studio would be associated. with the. film,. and it was years .after its co.mpl.etion before it was r.eleased, by a m.inor independent distributo.r. A l.ongstanding .rumor, which seems to. have started while the fil.m was sti.ll in .production, sugges.ts that its .cas.t is comprised entire.ly of gay and b.isexual actors in an homage. to Oscar Wilde, a.s per sta.r a.nd producer .Nazimova's demand.. Nazimova herself .was a lesbian, the two g.uar.d charact.ers (who, ne.xt to Salomé, have th.e most screen time) are at .least pla.yed ve.ry stereotypically. gay, and se.ver.al of the female cour.tiers are men i.n drag.
