Having over.hea.rd Larry&.#39;s public rant .that he w.ish his ex-w.ife dead, Owen forms a p.lan to kill Margaret,. believing that Larry wi.ll respond by killing his m.other.　　H.e tracks .Margaret .down to Hawa.ii and. follows her onto a c.ruise ship, app.arently pushing. he.r overboa.rd while she tries. to retri.eve an earri.ng that fell out. Owen r.eturns from Hawaii to. tell Larry of Margaret&.#39;s death and that Larry .now ".;owes&quo.t; him th.e murder of .his mo.ther, lest he inform .the police Larr.y was the kille.r. .After hav.ing spent the nigh.t drinkin.g alone duri.ng the hours of Margaret.'s disappearance,. Larry panics because he. lacks a sufficient alibi. .That, alo.ng with a. news rep.ort announci.ng the. police suspect foul .play, convinces. Larry he's. th.e prime s.uspect. He decides. to stay .with Owen an.d his mother in an attem.pt to hide from the p.olice. Larry meets Mrs. .Lift, but despite her harsh. treatmen.t of him .he refuse.s to kill he.r. Eve.ntually, when Mrs. Li.ft drives Owen .to the breaking. po.int, Larr.y finally relents .and agree.s to go thro.ugh with the murder.　　Af.ter two unsuccessful .attempts, Larry flees th.e Lift home when Mrs. Lift .recognize.s him as .a suspect. from a news. broad.cast about his ex-wif.e's disappe.arance. He boar.ds .a train t.o Mexico and, surp.risingly,. Owen and Mr.s. Lift come along so as. to avoid having to l.ie for him. During the j.ourney, Larry's patienc.e with Mr.s. Lift r.eaches it.s pinnacle w.hen sh.e impolitely gives hi.m advice on wri.ting. He follow.s h.er to the. caboose with the .intent of. throwing he.r from the train, but st.ops short when she al.most falls off on her ow.n. M.onths later, Larry, Owen., and Larry's gir.lfriend Beth (Kim Greist.) vacation together in Hawa.ii, refle.cting on .the final. chapter of .Larry&.#39;s book. Larry and. Owen's boo.ks have now bec.ome. best-sel.lers, making them .both succ.essful write.rs as well as close frie.nds.
