Having overheard. Larry's public rant th.at he wish h.is ex-wife d.ead, Owen forms. a plan to k.ill Margaret, believi.ng that L.arry will re.spond by killing his mother.. .He tracks Margaret down .to .Hawaii an.d follows her onto a cru.ise ship, apparent.ly pushing her overbo.ard while she tries to r.etrieve an earring th.at fell out. Owen .returns from Hawaii to tell. Larry of Ma.rgaret's. death and that. Larry now &.quot;owes" him t.he murder. of his moth.er, lest he inform the poli.ce .Larry was the killer. Af.ter. having s.pent the night drinking .alone during the h.ours of Margaret'.s disappearance, Larry p.anics because he lack.s a sufficient ali.bi. That, along with a news. report anno.uncing the p.olice suspect f.oul play, co.nvinces Larry he'.s the pri.me suspect. .He decides to stay with Owe.n a.nd his mother in an atte.mpt. to hide .from the police. Larry m.eets Mrs. Lift, bu.t despite her harsh t.reatment of him he refus.es to kill her. Event.ually, when Mrs. L.ift drives Owen to the brea.king point, .Larry finall.y relents and a.grees to go .through with the murd.er. Afte.r two unsucc.essful attempts, Larry flee.s t.he Lift home when Mrs. L.ift. recogniz.es him as a suspect from. a news broadcast .about his ex-wife'.;s disappearance. He boa.rds a train to Mexico. and, surprisingly., Owen and Mrs. Lift come a.long so as t.o avoid havi.ng to lie for h.im. During t.he journey, Larry'.;s patien.ce with Mrs.. He follows her. to the caboose wi.th the intent of thro.wing her from the train,. but stops short when. she almost falls .off on her own. Owen begins. having seco.nd thoughts .about having hi.s mother kil.led and comes to help. Larry re.scue her. Mr.s. Lift is grateful at her .son. for saving her, but una.ppr.eciative .of Larry's help and .kicks him, resulti.ng in him losing his .balance, landing on the .tracks, and breaking .his leg. During h.is recovery in the hospital., Larry disc.overs Margar.et is still ali.ve; she simp.ly fell overboard by .accident .and was resc.ued by a Polynesian fisherm.an .whom she has decided to .mar.ry.
